I was recently approached for a freelance writing project that sounded a little too good to be true. The client asked: “Would you be open/willing to get a free personal styling session, have pictures taken of you and write about it?” Me: “Uh, duh!”
The task was to try on a bunch of cute clothes a professional stylist picked out for me, drink wine, have pictures taken of me like I was a real model, and then write all about it. AND, I’d get paid for it! It was a triple score, so there was no way I was saying no.
When it came time for the styling session, I was nervous of course, but that quickly diminished once I got settled. I was surprised—in a good way—at what the stylist had picked out for me. Some items I’d never pick off the rack myself, but these clothes actually looked good on me. She knew my style better than I did—and I have the photos to prove it. The experience was a lot of fun, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to take something like this on. If you’re thinking of trying a personal styling service yourself, I’d say do it. Getting out of your style comfort zone is sometimes a good thing.
